Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Types, Treatments, and Smart Prevention
STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections), also known as STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases), are a group of infections transmitted through all types of sexual activities involving the mouth, anus, vagina, and male genitalia. Understanding STIs, their symptoms – which often include burning, itching, or fluid discharge in the genital area, and sometimes no symptoms at all – is crucial for both partners to prevent unknowingly spreading the infection.

What are the types of STIs?
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) include:
1. Gonorrhea
Caused by the bacterium Neisseria Gonorrhoeae, it is treatable with antibiotics for about 7 days. If symptoms persist, a follow-up visit to the doctor is necessary.
2. Chlamydia
This infection is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia Trachomatis. It is treatable with a 7-day course of antibiotics.
3. Syphilis
Caused by the bacterium Treponema Pallidum, it is treated with penicillin antibiotics, and sexual activity should be avoided until blood tests confirm the absence of the syphilis bacterium.

4. HPV Infection
Caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), there is no complete cure, but symptoms are managed with medications such as Podofilox, Imiquimod, and Trichloroacetic Acid.
5. Hepatitis B
This viral infection can be prevented by vaccination. Treatment includes oral medications (Nucleotide Analogs/Oral Nucleoside) and injectable drugs (Pegylated-Interferon Alpha).
6. Genital Herpes
Caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1 or HSV-2), it is treated with antiviral medications like Famciclovir, Acyclovir, and Valacyclovir.
7. Genital Warts
Caused by the HPV virus, treatments include medication, laser therapy, cryotherapy, electrocautery, and surgery.
8. AIDS
Caused by the HIV virus has no cure, but treatment includes medication and regular medical follow-ups to monitor symptoms.
9. Vaginal Trichomoniasis
Caused by the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis, it is treated with antibiotics, and sexual abstinence is advised until recovery.
Preventing STIs
The most effective way to prevent STIs is by using condoms. However, condoms may not prevent STIs that cause genital lesions, like genital herpes and syphilis. It’s also advised to use condoms during anal sex. Additional prevention methods can be found in the article “Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs): What Everyone Needs to Know to Reduce Risk“.
Summary
There are various STIs, some curable and others not yet curable. If infected, it’s crucial to seek immediate medical attention to prevent the spread and reduce the severity of the disease.
